attendaient impatiemment la production d'un tel disque. Les marches, galopes,
valses et reels québécois adoptés pour le petit instrument
et présentés en solo par l'un des grands maîtres québécois.
Non seulement Gabriel est un instrumentiste de grand talent mais il est aussi
l'un des archivistes les plus passionnés. C'est donc suite à ses
nombreuses sources et à sa grande collection d'enregistrements de disques
78 tours qu'il a soigneusement choisi les pièces de ce disque. Avec ce
disque et ses enregistrements des dernières années, Gabriel Labbé
a certainement contribué à redonner à l'harmonica diatonique
ses lettres de noblesse.
Gabriel Labbé in solo! A lot of specialists of the diatonic harmonica
have been impatiently awaiting the production of such a cd. The Québec
marches, **, waltzes and reels adapted for small instruments and presented in
solo by one of Québec’s grand masters. Not only does Gabriel have
tremendous talent as an instrumentalist, but he is also a passionate archivist.
This cd is the result of his having carefully chosen among his numerous sources
and large collection of 78s. With this cd and his recording from over the past
years, Gabriel Labbé has definitely contributed to honouring the diatonic
harmonica.

(1871-1944) un accordéoniste de grand talent qui nous a laissé
de nombreux enregistrements sur 78 tours dans les années 20 et 30.
Gabriel Labbé a su s'entourer d'un groupe de virtuoses pour
présenter un répertoire peu connu dans l'une des plus importantes
productions de l'année 95. Sabin Jacques à l'accordéon,
Richard Forest au violon, Mario Loiselle au piano et Benoît Bourque
aux percussions se joignent à Gabriel Labbé pour former l'un
des groupes instrumentaux les plus dynamiques jamais réunis. La qualité
de l'enregistrement est aussi exceptionnel et le somptueux livret (français
et anglais) à l'intérieur nous donne beaucoup d'information
sur les musiciens et le répertoire. Et en avant la musique...
This wonderful production is a tribute to Alfred Montmarquette (1871-1944),
a very famous accordion player who recorded many 78s in the 20s and 30s.
Gabriel Labbé has selected and adapted the best of Montmarquette's
very unusual and original repertoire. He is joined by an exceptional band
of virtuosos: Sabin Jacques on accordion, Richard Forest on fiddle, Mario
Loiselle on piano and Benoît Bourque on percussion. Because of its
excellent quality, this new production has already been highly acclaimed
by all the critics. It comes with a fancy 16-page booklet, with notes both
in French and English about the musicians, the repertoire, Montmarquette
and Québec instrumental music in general.

compact (TB-036-CD) mais aussi des pièces inédites issues des
enregistrements originaux sur 78 tours, des photographies, une biogaphie complète

This book of transcriptions on Alfred Montmarquette’s music was compiled
by Francine Catafard Grenier. It has some pieces that are on the CD but also
unpublished ones from the original 78 recordings. It also has photos, a complete
biography and musical sources.

Ce
disque de Gaston a largement contribué à diffusé le répertoire
de cet accordéoniste renommé du début du siècle.
Déjà cité par plusieurs, son répertoire avait fait
l'objet d'un livre de transcriptions (TB-207-B). Le document sonore vient se
marier à ce livre et en plus de nous livre une excellente production;
il complète une documentation exceptionnelle sur cet artiste québécois.Gaston
semble si à l'aise dans ce répertoire qu'on pourrait croire qu'il
a été écrit pour lui! On y retrouve même la fameuse
composition Hommage à Montmarquette de Philippe Bruneau.
This recording from Gaston Nolet has largely contributed to making known the
repertoire of this well-known accordion player from the beginning of the 20th
century. Alfred Montmarquette's repertoire is played by some other musicians
and a book of musical trnascriptions has also already been published (TB-207-B).
This excellent recording production was made to go along with the book and completes
an exceptional work on this exceptional Québécois musician.Gaston
is so comfortable with this repertoire one would think it was composed just
for him! The widely played composition Hommage à Montmarquette
by Philippe Bruneau can also be heard on this recording.

traditionnels du Québec. Ses recherches et ses connaissances contribuent

78 tours jouées selon sa technique et accompagnées au piano
par l'unique Denis Pépin. ...une pièce de collection pour

Gabriel Labbé is Québec's most renowned harmonica player.
He is also a record collector and archivist. He has already published two
books about traditional musicians dating from the beginning of the century
until today. The repertoire played here is unique and was chosen from a
variety of sources. We also find many of the first tunes that he composed.
Denis Pépin accompanies him on piano.

en récital à la Maison de la culture Frontenac à Montréal.
Le maître de l'harmonica met encore ici en valeur le répertoire
populaire du début du siècle (le 20e!) au Québec, un
répertoire tiré de sa vaste collection de disques 78 tours.
Il présente des galopes, des reels, des marches et des
valses auxquels
viennent s'ajouter des compositions tout à fait dans l'esprit de
l'époque. Dorothée Hogan est tout à son aise dans ce
répertoire qui donne tant de place à l'harmonisation et aux
couleurs du piano. Michel Donato, un contrebasssiste réputé
au Québec, a touché à tout les styles et ses apports
à la musique traditionnelle sont très appréciés.
With Michel Donato on bass and Dorothée Hogan on piano, Gabriel
Labbé shares with us a memorable evening of music performed at the
Maison de la culture Frontenac, in Montréal. This master harmonica
player presents pieces from the popular repertoire from the beginning of
the century (20th) in Québec, a repertoire taken from his vast collection
78s. The tunes include galops, reels, marches, waltzes, and original compositions
written in the spirit of that era. Dorothée Hogan is right at home
with this repertoire giving as much importance to the harmonies as the
colour of the piano. Michel Donato, a well-known bass player in Québec,
has touched all sorts of styles and his contribution to traditional music
