Jean Carignan est de loin le plus illustre des violoneux québécois.
Disparu dans les années 80, il a laissé un grand nombre d'enregistrements
et a influencé non seulement les violoneux locaux mais plusieurs
des grands violonistes de son époque. Il n'est pas surprenant que
l'Université McGill de Montréal lui ait décerné
un doctorat honorifique. 
Sa feuille de route est si longue qu'on
ne pourrait ici nommer qu'une petite partie de ses réalisations.
Ce vidéo, produit par l'Office national du film du Canada, est certainement
le plus important document nous permettant aujourd'hui de partager sa vie,
sa musique et surtout son extraordinaire talent. Le film laisse toute la
place à l'homme et au musicien qui interprète des pièces
caractéristiques des différentes époques de sa vie.
De Joseph Allard, au répertoire familial, en passant par Coleman
et Skinner, Carignan, au sommet de son art, nous éblouit par sa musicalité
et son brio. La qualité sonore et visuel du document est soignée
et nous permet enfin de vibrer au son de ce violon magique. Jean Carignan,
violoneux.... est certainement le film que j'ai visionné le plus
souvent au cours des années sans jamais m'en lasser. Au-delà
du plaisir de l'écouter, il demeure inoubliable et inspirant de le
regarder manier l'archet afin de se graver en mémoire pour toujours,
l'image de ce grand maître.
Jean Carignan is by far the most well-known fiddler from Québec.
Although he passed away in the 1980s, he left a vast number of recordings
and influenced not only local musicians but also many of the great violinists
of his time. It is not surprising that McGill University in Montréal
awarded him an honorary doctorate. His achievements are so numerous that
we can only mention a small part of them. This video, produced by the National
Film Board of Canada, is certainly the best document today giving us a glimpse
of his life, his music and, above all, his extraordinary talent. The film
places great importance on the man and his music with examples of pieces
characteristic of different periods of his life. From Joseph Allard, family
repertoire, Coleman and Skinner, Carignan, at the peak of his musical career,
dazzles us with his brilliance and virtuosity. The audio and visual aspects
of the film were carefully done so that we can relive the sound of his magic
fiddle. "Jean Carignan, violoneux".... is one of my all time favourite
films. I have watched it again and again over the years always discovering
new points of interest. More than just a listening experience, it is unforgettably
inspiring to watch his bowing. The image of this great master is engraved
in our memory.

Voici enfin un enregistrement de Jean Carignan disponible sur disque
compact. Tirée d'enregistrements réalisés aux réseaux
français et anglais de Radio-Canada, cette production contient de
nombreux classiques de son répertoire choisis parmi ses meilleures
interprétations. "Jean Carignan est tout et plus que tout ce
qui a été dit sur lui". Cette phrase du violoneux des
Shetland Aly Bain qui venait tout juste d'entendre pour la première
fois le grand maître dénote bien la grandeur du musicien. C'était
au festival de Fox Hollow, dans l'état de New York, et Aly Bain était
assis près de la tente, estomaqué par ce qu'il venait d'entendre!
Tout a été dit sur le plus célèbre des
violoneux québécois décédé à la
fin des années 80. Il est presque inutile de qualifier son jeu ou
de parler de sa musicalité et de son unique talent. Finalement reconnu
du grand public et adulé de ses pairs à la fin de sa carrière,
il est toujours demeuré un homme modeste et a vécu pauvrement
en gagant sa vie comme chauffeur de taxi pendant de longues années
à Montréal. Yehudi Menuhin a dit de lui "le plus extraordinaire
caractère et violoniste que j'aie connu! Jean Carignan appartient
à un peuple, à une culture et à une terre. La force
de sa musique l'a ainsi forgé." Son répertoire comptait
quelque 7000 pièces et son génie a été reconnu
par tous. Il a été reçu Membre de l'ordre du Canada
et fut récipiendaire du prix Calixa-Lavallée.
Finally, here is the first recording of Jean Carignan available on CD.
Taken from recordings made by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation on the
French and English networks, this album contains numerous classics from
his repertoire chosen from the best recordings. "Jean Carignan is everything
and more than what's ever been said about him". These were the words
of Shetland fiddler Aly Bain amazed after hearing this great master for
the first time at the Fox Hollow Folk Festival in upstate New York. Everything
has already been said about the most famous Québec fiddler who died
at the end of the 1980s. No words can express his unique talent, playing
style and musicality. Only at the end of his career did he gain public recognition
and remained a very modest man earning his living as a taxi driver for many
years in Montréal. Yehudi Menuhin described him as "the most
extraordinary character and violinist I know". Jean Carignan belongs
to a people, a culture and a land. The power of his music seized him and
made him. He had a repertoire of nearly 7000 tunes and his genius has been
recognized widely. Carignan was named to the Order of Canada and was the
recipient of the Calixa-Lavallée award.

Jean Carignan a toujours été un admirateur des
plus grands violonistes. Il est ici l'invité du compositeur Donald
Patriquin. Dans "Fantaisie pour violoneux et cordes", Patriquin
a intégéré et adapté cinq pièces traditionnelles
comme autant de mouvements d'un concerto. Carignan interprète Paddy
Ryan's Dream, un pot-pourri de giques irlandaises, des airs écossais
de Scott Skinner et le reel du pendu. Le concerto est interprété
par l'orchestre de chambre McGill. Ce disque classique a voulu rendre hommage
au plus célèbre violoneux du Québec. Il est surprenant
d'entendre la maître accompagné par quelques violonistes. On
retrouve aussi sur ce disque des mouvements composés par Patriquin
dont l'un en mémoire du compositeur allemand Paul Hindemith.
Jean Carignan had always been a great admirer of violinists. On this
album, he was invited as a guest artist by composer Donald Patriquin. In
"Fantaisie pour violoneux et cordes", Patriquin integrated and
adapted five traditional tunes for the movements of a concerto. Carignan
plays Paddy Ryan's Dream, a pot-pourri of Irish jigs, Scottish tunes from
Scott Skinner and hangman's reel. The concerto is played by the McGill Chamber
Orchestra. This classical record renders homage to the most famous Québec
fiddler. It is surprising to hear Carignan accompanied by several violinists.
We also find on this record movements composed by Patriquin, one of which
is in memory of German composer Paul Hindemith.

Voici enfin l'enregistrement du grand maître québécois
du violon, que plusieurs attendaient depuis longtemps. Réalisés
à l'automne de 1976 à sa résidence par Carmelle Bégin
du Musée Canadien des Civilisations, ces enregistrements n'avaient
jamais connu de diffusion. On reconnaît plusieurs des pot-pourris
favoris du maître des musiques des Skinner, Coleman et Allard mais
aussi des pièces inédites, toujours jouées avec fougue
et brio. Il faut entendre les interprétations des parties du quadrille
de Jos Bouchard pour réaliser toute la richesse de l'interprète.
Les enregistrements mettent en effet en relief toute la virtuosité
et
la musicalité d'un Carignan au sommet de son art. Gilles
Losier souligne avec aisance, avec un piano vivant, les contours de ces
mélodies sur les deux premiers disques tandis que le troisième
laisse toute la place au plus grand de nos violoneux. Ce coffret de trois
disques cumulent près de 170 minutes de musique. Merci à Tout
Crin et à Carmelle Bégin de nous offrir enfin ce précieux
cadeau.
We have been looking forward to the release of this recording of the
great Québécois master fiddler for a long time. Carmelle Bégin,
who now works at the Canadian Museum of Civilizations, made this recording
at Carignan's home in the fall of 1976 while doing her master's thesis and
these recordings have never been released up until now. There are many of
Carignan's favourite medleys from the repertoire's of Skinner, Coleman and
Allard as well as many others that we have never heard before, which are
all played with brio. Listening to him play the different parts of the Quadrille
of Jos Bouchard is a real treat. The recordings accentuate Carignan's musicality
and virtuosity at the peak of his career. Gilles Losier's lively back-up
piano is heard on the first two CDs whereas the third CD leaves room for
us to hear our greatest fiddler unaccompanied. This collection of three
CDs consists of nearly 170 minutes of music and the accompanying booklet
contains a well-documented bilingual biography of the artist. Thanks to
