In 2009, the talented trio Serre L'Écoute has come out with an original
production rooted in their love of traditional song. If you think you have heard
every kind of traditional song and you think they can't be arranged in an original
way, you will be pleasantly surprised. Taken from a very unusual repertoire,
the songs are often presented with beautiful vocal harmonies and interesting
traditional arrangementsby the trio Liette Remon, Robert and Gabrielle Bouthillier.

Gabrielle Bouthillier et Liette
Remon ( Kadou) se sont jointes à Robert Bouthillier, chanteur et ethnologue
(le père de Gabrielle) pour former Serre L'Écoute, trois chanteurs
mais aussi trois chercheurs, collectionneurs de trésors. Ce
disque consacré au répertoire maritime du St-Laurent est beaucoup
plus qu'une collection de chansons inédites illustrant la richesse de notre
patrimoine, c'est un bijoux à écouter! Avec des arrangements volontairement
sobres, ils ont choisi de laisser toute la place aux mélodies en se consacrant
à la qualité des interprétations et ce avec une grande maturité.
Si les chanteurs de Lanaudière ont mis en valeur les chansons à
répondre, et Michel Faubert les complaintes, Serre L'Écoute nous
fait entendre la troisième voix de nos chansons traditionnelles. Le violon
de Liette et le piano de Gabrielle composent la majeure partie de l'instrumentation
où l'on retrouve aussi Gilles Pitre (pieds) et Jean-Philippe Reny (bouzouki).
La pochette est magnifique (merci à Vivian Labrie)... un vrai livre de
chansons!
Serre L'Écoute consists of Gabrielle Bouthillier, Robert Bouthillier
and Liette Remon, three singers and song collectors. This CD contains Maritime
songs of the St-Lawrence and illustrates the richness of our heritage. It is
more than a collection of unusual songs because it is truly a pleasure to listen
to. The purposefully, sparing arrangements leave lots of room for the beautiful
melodies and wonderfully mature interpretations. From the response song singers
of Lanaudière to Michel Faubert’s ballad singing, Serre L'Écoute
introduces us to another aspect of traditional singing. The cover is magnificent

Fortunes et perditions est un
album de quinze chansons explorant le thème de la destinée humaine,
dans ses succès et ses revers. Québécoises, acadiennes, bretonnes
ou même guadeloupéenne, ces chansons sont toutes issues de la tradition
orale et la plupart proviennent directement des fonds de collectage des membres
du groupe.
Formé en 2001, Serre l’Écoute est constitué
de trois chanteurs, musiciens et collecteurs parmi les chefs de file du mouvement
folk d’ici : Robert Bouthillier, Liette Remon (Strada, Stadaconé,
Bigaouette Big Band, Bobelo, Eya) et Gabrielle Bouthillier (Strada, .d’escabeaux).
Serre l’Écoute propose un répertoire de chansons traditionnelles
francophones choisies pour leur rareté et leur originalité, dans
des interprétations solides aux racines profondes. Serre l’Écoute
chante surtout a cappella, en s’offrant ici et là le luxe d’un
arrangement polyphonique ou instrumental, toujours avec finesse et audace.
Fortunes
et perditions is a CD containing 15 songs exploring the ups and downs of human
destiny. Whether Québécois, Acadian, Breton or even Guadeloupian,
these songs are all from oral tradition and most of them were collected by the
members of the group. Formed in 2001, the ensemble Serre l'Écoute consists
of three singers, musicians and song collectors who are among the most important
figures in the Québec traditional music movement including Robert Bouthillier,
Liette Remon (Strada, Stadaconé, Bigaouette Big Band, Bobelo, Eya) and
Gabrielle Bouthillier (Strada, .d’escabeaux). Serre l’Écoute
proposes traditional songs in French that were chosen for their rareness and originality.
The interpretations are well done and deeply imbedded in the traditional culture.
Serre l’Écoute sings mostly a cappella with polyphonic and instrumental
arrangements. Each song is performed with great finesse and audacity.
